KANM’s Statement on Creativity and Academic Freedom

At KANM, we know creativity can only thrive where ideas are free. The ability to explore, experiment, and challenge assumptions is what makes Texas A&M a place of learning and discovery.
Recent decisions by former Texas A&M President Mark Welsh and the Board of Regents have sent a discouraging message to students: that some ideas are too risky to explore, and some conversations too controversial to have.
When academic freedom is weakened, the same forces that limit what can be taught also limit what can be created. When professors and students are second-guessing what can be said or studied, we all lose out on opportunities to grow.
KANM stands with our fellow students and faculty in affirming that academic freedom and creativity go hand in hand. Protecting one protects the other. We urge our university’s leaders to recognize that the strength of Texas A&M comes not from narrowing what can be expressed, but from an environment where bold ideas, open discussion, and creative exploration are not only allowed, but encouraged.
This commitment comes from our Aggie Core Values. Respect means allowing all perspectives to be heard. Leadership requires defending truth and creativity. Integrity calls us to uphold our principles. Selfless Service asks that we protect these freedoms for ourselves and for our future.
Without freedom of thought, there can be no true creativity. Without creativity, our future as Aggies is diminished.
